Music and Memories

April 18, 2024

The Royce, in collaboration with the Talent Development Project (TDP) and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), embarked on a new initiative known as “Music and Memories.” This innovative program aims to use music to enrich the lives of individuals living with dementia by creating original songs inspired by their life stories.

The involvement of two of our residents, Ann, and May, was paramount to the success of this collaboration. As Bianca, our Managing Director stated, “Tulich and The Royce are committed to enhancing the lives of people living with dementia and broadening community understanding of what it means for both the individuals and their families.” This sentiment underscores the importance of initiatives like ‘Music and Memories’, which not only provide opportunities for individuals with dementia to engage in activities but also foster a deeper sense of connection and understanding within the community here at The Royce.

Ann and May’s involvement emphasised the significance of this initiative. A week after the experiment, Ann asked staff, “when will I have this experience again?” Ann’s comments showed all involved that the initiative was effective and left a mark on participants.

Since May’s song was finalised and produced, she proudly talks about her experience and displays the framed art and lyrics in her room which has sparked numerous conversations with fellow residents and staff. May tends to add different pieces of another story to this story, but what we know is that she felt privileged and special to have had a song made purely based on her life, and proudly displays the framed lyrics in her room.

The outcome of the day left both Ann and May overwhelmed with gratitude. Their appreciation for the experience served as a testament to the impact of music on individuals living with dementia. The Royce community, equally moved by the success of the initiative, expressed a desire to participate in future events that benefit residents, further highlighting the organisation’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its members.
